Yesterday we were delighted to welcome 38 Business Management pupils from Lockerbie Academy (S4–S6) to our Lockerbie base this week, as part of a new partnership designed to inspire the next generation of construction professionals.

Split into two groups, the pupils enjoyed a day packed with activities that gave them a real insight into the industry.

Alongside tours of our manufacturing yard, they took part in hands-on workshops including kit building with Kinetix materials, health and safety risk assessments, and visual fault detection exercises.

They also learned how projects move from the very first design stages through to completion.

This initiative builds on our ongoing work with the Dumfries and Galloway Developing the Young Workforce Group (DYWDG), where we’ve been actively promoting career opportunities for young people across the region.

Through this partnership, we’ve supported schools and businesses with events and activities designed to showcase the wide variety of roles within construction and manufacturing.

Ryan Brown, Managing Director of Robinsons Group, said:

“We’re really excited about this partnership with Lockerbie Academy and the wider Developing the Young Workforce initiative.

“As a family business that started 20 years ago, we know how important it is to invest in the next generation.

“These visits give us the chance to share our passion for construction and manufacturing while showing young people the fantastic career opportunities available right here in their local community.

“The enthusiasm and curiosity from the students yesterday was brilliant to see.”

The pupils themselves also found the experience valuable. Leon Osborne-Smith, who attended the visit, said:

“The visit to Robinsons was really eye-opening.

“I didn’t realise how much goes into building these structures, from the first designs to the finished product.

“The hands-on activities were great, especially the fault detection task. It’s definitely made me think more seriously about careers in construction.”

As well as practical workshops, the pupils heard from our operations supervisor, viewed drone footage of recent projects, and took part in health and safety sessions, all designed to give them a taste of real-world industry challenges.

Looking ahead, further visits are already in the pipeline. Next time, Lockerbie Academy pupils will have the chance to explore our CWP Concrete yard, where they’ll learn about finance and sales operations in addition to site activities, giving them an even broader understanding of the sector.

At Robinsons, we are proud to support local education and skills development.

By working with schools and community partners, we aim to help build a strong workforce for the future while encouraging young people to discover the rewarding careers available in construction and manufacturing.
