Let’s Talk Safety – Because No Job is Worth a Life.

This week marks the 13th Farm Safety Week, led by the Farm Safety Foundation (Yellow Wellies).

It’s a chance for the entire agricultural industry – including us – to shine a spotlight on health and safety and take a moment to reflect:

Would you leave your safety to luck?

Farming may only account for 1% of the UK workforce, but it’s responsible for a shocking 16% of all workplace deaths.

Last year alone, 23 farm workers and 4 members of the public – including two children – lost their lives in incidents that were, in many cases, preventable.

Why We Must Keep Talking About Safety

Despite countless safety campaigns, risky behaviours on farms remain alarmingly common. A 2023 survey found:

  • 1 in 5 farm staff admit they would take a risk with their safety during a task
  • 1 in 3 say they wouldn’t stop to carry out a risk assessment before starting work

Whether it’s using machinery, handling livestock, or working at height – the danger is real.

But this year’s campaign goes further – urging us to look at less obvious risks too, like:

  • Wearing PPE on ATVs
  • Safe chemical handling
  • Mental distractions that lead to mistakes

What You Can Do: Take 5 To Stay Alive

Before each task, ask:

  • Do I have the right tools and PPE?
  • What could go wrong?
  • Am I trained and confident to do this safely?
  • Is there a better, safer way?
  • Have I made time to think and plan?

STOP. THINK. PLAN.
Taking just 5 minutes could save a life.

Create a Culture of Safety

Let’s move away from the “it’ll never happen to me” mindset.

Safety isn’t just about ticking a box – it’s about making sure every one of us gets home safe – today, tomorrow, and every day.

Simple steps we can all take:

Let’s Be the Change

Farm Safety Week is a timely reminder that accidents don’t always happen because of faulty equipment – they happen when we’re rushed, distracted, overconfident, or taking shortcuts.

At Robinsons, we’re committed to helping raise awareness and supporting a safer future for farming. Let’s all play our part.

Safety isn’t about luck. It’s about action.
