Why is CE Marking Important?

Home | News | Why is CE Marking Important?

A question we see asked often is: “what is CE marking and why should it be important to me?”

With this in mind, we wanted to provide our customers with more information about CE Marking and why it is important to work with a responsible company who abides by this requirement while highlighting the potential repercussions of using suppliers who don’t.

We’re going to chat you through what CE Marking is and why ensuring you purchase a CE Marked building is important.

To begin, it is important to understand what CE Marking is. As of July 2014, it has been mandatory for all fabricated structural steel products to be CE Marked. This was a major change to the manufacturing and construction industries and has been introduced to ensure that all responsible steel suppliers are working to the same high industry standards. Companies abiding by CE Marking standards will be paying meticulous attention to health and safety and environmental standards – giving their customers some extra peace of mind. CE Marking also ensures that any steel buildings are fit for the geographical area in which they are situated – for example, buildings are erected with the ability to hold heavy snow loads or to withstand high winds.

Buying a CE Marked building lets you know that the components of your building have been checked by a Quality Control Manager (QCM). Our QCM checks the plates and welds of each building, ensuring that all industry requirements are always being adhered to. When your building is CE Marked, you know that a set of rules relating to health and safety, quality, and environmental protection requirements are being followed. You will know that the company you have contracted are putting the safety of its customers and team members first.

The penalties for non-compliance with CE Marking include suspension notices, prohibition notices, notices to warn and application for forfeiture. For certain offences, these penalties may include a fine, imprisonment or both.

Buildings which do not hold up to CE Marking standards can pose a danger to those who are working on them, as well as to those who will use the building once it is complete. This is why it is vital you choose a responsible company who is following CE Marking procedures for all your structural steel requirements.

A common misconception is that only the person you have hired is at fault should anything go wrong, however, legislation now states that blame lies with both the contractor (you) and the company you have hired (for example, Robinsons). With this in mind, using a fully accredited, reputable companies such as Robinsons is always your best option.
