House on the Loch

Location: Loch Carron, Scotland
Type of building: Residential

Our very own Grand Designs Project – House on the Loch!

Situated overlooking Loch Carron in the Scottish Highland, the plot which was chosen for this house was on a steep hill leading down onto the very scenic Loch.   Usually, on a house build such as this, a lot of blockwork would need to be completed in order to make the foundations stable to allow the housebuilders to erect the house up from the hillside. We gave our team the challenge to develop something more cost effective and functional.

The team at Robinsons Structural Steelwork developed the idea to use steel legs to build a platform that would form the base of the house, allowing the floor to be poured on to a metal deck to create a large concrete slab for the house to be built on.

The results speak for themselves and the steel frame coming out from the hillside has enabled the homeowners to take full advantage of the stunning view in front of them as well as allowing them to utilise the space below the house too (which would not have been possible had a built-up blockwork been used!)
